Siegi Ferstl is 41 years old, lives in the Bavarian city of Kehlheim and works as a forestry master. He is a triathlete and exercises about 20 hours per week. His hobbies are traveling and rock climbing. Siegi participated in the Naturathlon 2007 yet, is a funny guy and a fit teammate. |
Sigi Gerstenberg is 65 years old and the „Oldie“of the nature athlete’s team. But certainly that doesn’t mean that the others have to wait for him. He is absolutely in best shape for his age! His origin is from Eisenach a city in the central part of Germany and cycling became his passion. Besides he likes hiking. It is a special adventure for him to “enjoy the beauty of nature and to connect this with athletic exercise.” |
Birger Hieke is 38 years old, lives in the city of Greifswald in North Germany and works as a trainer and instructor. He rides his racing bike or mountain bike about five times a week and jogs twice. Furthermore he spends a lot of time with his family and his German shepherd Quessa & cat Lotte, preferrably outside in the nature. He already participated in the Naturathlon 2005 when he got to know the nature along the Green Belt in Germany, which he thinks is worth being protected. “This year again I would like to contribute in showing others the need for conversation of the nature along the former “Iron Curtain”. And I want to show the bonds between east and west in a united Europe.” |

Frank Hülsemann is 37 years old, lives and works in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia. The Chemist works at the „Deutschen Forschungszentrum für Leistungssport“ (German research center of competitive sports) in Cologne. Frank is an extreme athlete and was originally active in running. Today he feels at home in many endurance sports. Since 1994 he goes regularly in for extreme expeditions that already showed him the whole world. Frank’s sporty adventure trips are presented impressively on his homepage http://www.exyle.de/ . Last year Frank already rode his bike more than 6,000 kilometers along the former “Iron Curtain”. Naturathlon 2009 gives him the opportunity “to get a deeper insight into our youngest history.” Besides he is looking forward to “international contacts to people from states of both sites of the former “Iron Curtain”, which he got to see himself, when he was a kid. |
André Schällig is 32 years old. He comes from the small village Battin in central Germany and studies Sports and Geography in Potsdam. During the week he rides his bike three to four times, jogs twice and swims once. Sports in company belongs to his favorite activities. His hobby is music – he plays clarinet and saxophone. As a teacher for Sports and Geography André sees himself being a role model for younger people. That’s why he wants to make the importance of doing sports and the sustainable conservation accessible to them. “I would like to get across the compatibility of nature conservation and sustainable use of leisure time accessible. Students shall be able to discover on their own that exercising sports in an intact nature belongs to the nicest things you can do and thereby stand up for nature conservation themselves and start living it.” |
Gabi Sparkuhl is 36 years old and lives in the small town Trebur. She works in the Department of the Environment in the field of protection of species. Middle and long distance runs belong to her sporty field of activities as well as biking. Besides she likes hiking and going for a walk with her friend and her dog. Through her participationh in the Naturathlon, Gabi wants to have a share in active nature conservation. “I know how difficult it is to promote nature conservation without prohibitions. That’s why I want to add my part with activities like the Naturathlon to it. I think that humans, nature and sports can fit together well, if all interests are considered coequal and that nature definitely can be fun!!!” |
